Do you trust Internet critics and reviewers still?..

There’s a Russian self-pub site, very popular here, called Samizdat. It’s much more popular in Russia then Wattpad.

A new author appeared on it at 2012. A Russian girl named Svetlana Skornyakova had published a romantic-looking picture and the first six chapters of a western romance novel called Children of West. Then she contacted reviewers. She begged to tell her about mistakes and possible improvements.

Reviewers (mostly male) used all of their intelligence and analysis. They said stuff like:

The genre, as I can guess, is a romance.

I can’t see any well-described male character

costs of age, youthful reception of world and the opposite sex

I can’t resist the feeling that your man thinks like a girl. A young girl.

The only problem with this deep analysis was that the author and his text were a pure hoax, an experiment to test the critic’s intuition. The real source of fake western romance Children of West were the classical translation by V. Stanevich (1929) of first six chapters from The Valley of the Moon by Jack London (1912).
